According to Christian historians, the story of Christianity in Egypt started 80 years after the death of Cleopatra, and 12 years after the crucifixion of Christ. It began, with a humble Alexandrian shoemaker called Anianus.
One day a man entered Anianus’ workshop, the man said his name is Mark, and he came from far away, and he needed his sandals fixed to continue his journey. When Anianus asked him where did he come from? And to where he intended to travel?
Mark told Anianus that a new prophet has arrived to save us. His name is Christ. Mark taught Anianus about the life of Christ, his miracles, and his teachings. Anianus Listened to Mark, and he believed him. This was Saint Mark the Evangelist, the author of the Gospel of Mark, and that was Anianus, the first Christian in Egypt, and a disciple of Saint Mark.
Together they started preaching the gospel throughout Egypt and founded the church of Alexandria. In the years to follow the church in Alexandria would grow significantly. And Saint Mark was its first patriarch. Following the martyrdom of Mark. Anianus became the patriarch of the church of Alexandria. He would remain so for over seventeen years. During his time, the number of Christians in the area grew significantly. Paving the way for Christianity in Egypt. In the years to come, Cairo would become the new heart of Egypt, and so it would be the new heart of Christianity in Egypt.
